Questions about the true cost of a rental
What is the difference between what I pay, the deposit and the excess?
What you pay is the rental, Salik tolls and any extras, and it leaves your account for good. The deposit is held on your credit card and released after you return the car. The excess is the share of a repair bill you could be asked to cover if the car is damaged. It is a limit on what you could owe, not a charge. The calculator shows the three separately because adding them together would make a rental look dearer than it is.
Where do the figures in the calculator come from?
The daily rate is the typical band for the car type in the TripReview price index, built from the daily ranges published for each model. The deposit, insurance excess, kilometres included, extra-kilometre rate and second-driver fee are the median of what rental companies publish on their own sites, used only when several companies publish that term. Where too few do, the calculator uses a market typical from our own terms survey and marks the line as one.
Is this a quote?
No. It is an estimate from market ranges, so it will not match any one company's price exactly. Peak weekends and high season push daily rates up, and every company sets its own terms. Use it to compare rentals and to know what to ask for, then get the all-in figure in writing before you pay.
What do Published by companies, Market typical and Varies by company mean on each line?
Published by companies means several rental companies state that figure on their own pages, and the line names where it was read from. Market typical means a typical figure rather than one companies publish: the daily rate comes from our price index, Salik from the gate tariff and how you will drive, and the deposit, excess and other terms from our terms survey wherever too few companies publish them. Varies by company means no honest figure exists, so the line shows a dash rather than a guess.
Why does a longer rental cost less per day?
Companies discount weekly and monthly hires. From a week upwards the calculator takes a stepped discount off the daily rate, and the assumptions panel states the exact discount it used for your length of hire.
Does the estimate include fuel, insurance upgrades or fines?
No. Fuel, optional insurance upgrades, parking and traffic fines are left out, because they depend on the company and on what happens during the hire. Salik is included as an estimate from the way you will drive, without any administration fee a company may add on top.
