You do not have to miss the trip: most operators can take you straight to the camp by a gentler route, or you can choose a camel trek or a heritage-style safari without the dune drive. Ask when you book.

• Sit facing forward, by a window, and look at the horizon.
• Take a motion-sickness tablet 30–60 minutes before if you are prone to it.
• Tell the driver early — they can slow down or stop.

3What should you check before booking an operator?

4Is the heat dangerous?

In summer the desert is extremely hot in the middle of the day. Evening and morning safaris avoid the worst of it, but drink water throughout, wear a hat and sunscreen, and take quad biking and sandboarding slowly. Heat exhaustion is the most common problem on summer trips, not the driving.

5What is the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve?

A protected area with controlled routes and wildlife, where only a limited number of approved operators may run tours. Trips there are usually calmer, better regulated and more expensive. If the reserve matters to you, confirm the operator has permission to enter it.

6Red flags when booking a safari

• A price far below what other operators charge for the same trip.
• No licence number, no address, or only a phone number.
• Payment by bank transfer to a personal account.
• Vague answers about dune time, the camp or what is included.
• Vehicles without seat belts for every passenger.

Search the operator on the Scam Watchlist and read recent reviews that mention the driving and the vehicle, not just the dinner.

7Staying safe on the day

• Wear your seat belt for the whole dune drive.
• Keep hands and heads inside the vehicle.
• Drink water through the trip, especially in summer.
• Follow the guide's instructions on quads, buggies and sandboards.
