What to check before you pay a deposit
- The operator's permitDune driving inside the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve needs a DET permit. An operator who will not name theirs is running outside the reserve, which is legal but different — ask which it is.
- What the hours actually coverA “seven-hour safari” usually counts the hotel pickup and the drop-off. Two of those hours can be the drive. Ask how long you are in the desert.
- Shared or privateA shared 4x4 carries six. If the price looks unusually low for a private trip, it is almost certainly a shared seat.
- What the price includesDinner and the camp programme are normally included. Quad bikes, buggies, camel rides beyond the short loop and soft drinks are usually extra.

3What to check before you pay

- A roll cage and proper seat belts or harnesses in the 4x4 — ask, and look before you get in.
- Off-road passenger insurance that covers the dune drive.
- The driver's safari driving permit.
- A written, itemised quote: dune minutes, camp type, dinner, shows and every extra.
- Payment by card with a receipt, and a cancellation and weather policy in writing.

Is dune bashing safe for children?
Operators generally set a minimum age of three and ask pregnant travellers not to take the dune drive. A morning safari is gentler than an evening one, and most operators will drive more softly on request.
Do I need to book in advance?
In winter, yes — November to March fills up, especially at weekends. In summer there is usually availability the same day, and prices drop.
What should I wear?
Loose clothes and closed shoes. The desert drops sharply in temperature after sunset between November and February, so bring a layer for an evening or overnight trip.
