1What is the best route from Dubai to Abu Dhabi?

Most drivers take the E11: south-west down Sheikh Zayed Road past Jebel Ali, then straight on into Abu Dhabi. The E311 (Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road) runs parallel further inland and joins near the border — useful when Sheikh Zayed Road is jammed.

Yas Island and Ferrari World come first, about an hour out; Saadiyat, the Louvre and the city centre are 20–30 minutes further.

2Are there tolls between Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

Two systems. In Dubai, Salik charges at its gates on Sheikh Zayed Road — AED 4 off-peak or AED 6 at peak. In Abu Dhabi, Darb charges at gates on the bridges onto Abu Dhabi island, mainly during weekday rush hours. Both are billed to the rental company, which charges you afterwards with VAT.

3What are the speed limits on the way?

Limits change along the route and are signed clearly. Abu Dhabi enforces them with no margin, and the cameras are frequent — including average-speed stretches. Stick to the posted limit, keep right unless overtaking, and watch for sudden fog warnings on winter mornings.

4Where can you stop for fuel and a break?

ENOC and ADNOC service stations sit along the E11 with fuel, coffee, toilets and prayer rooms, attendant-served at most pumps. Fuel costs the same in every emirate, so there is no reason to fill up before leaving.

5Can you pick up in Dubai and drop off in Abu Dhabi?

Yes, with most larger companies, for a one-way fee — ask for it when you book and get the drop-off point in writing. A round trip in a day needs no special arrangement: the car can go anywhere in the UAE on standard insurance.

6A day trip to Abu Dhabi by car

Returning on a Friday or Sunday evening? Expect heavy traffic into Dubai. Leaving an hour later often saves an hour on the road.
