Quick answer
Every rental car in Dubai comes with basic insurance, but it carries an excess — the amount you pay towards damage, typically AED 1,000–5,000 depending on the car. Collision damage waiver (CDW) or full cover, bought for a daily fee, reduces that excess, often to zero. No insurance pays out without a police report, and off-road driving is almost never covered.
1Is insurance included in car rental in Dubai?
Yes. A rental car must be insured, and the rate includes a basic policy that covers third parties and damage to the car itself — but with an excess. If the car is damaged and you are at fault, or the other driver cannot be identified, you pay up to the excess; the insurer pays the rest.
The excess is what varies. It is usually around AED 1,000–2,000 on an economy car and rises with the car's value to several thousand dirhams on luxury models.
2What are CDW and full insurance?
Whether full cover is worth it depends on the car and your stay. On an economy car with a small excess and a short rental, many drivers accept the risk. On a luxury car, a long rental or a first visit to Dubai's roads, the daily fee usually buys real peace of mind.
| Option | What it does | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Basic (included) | What it doesCovers the car and third parties, with an excess you pay | Typical costIncluded in the rate |
| CDW (collision damage waiver) | What it doesLowers the excess you pay after an accident | Typical costA daily fee |
| Full cover / SCDW | What it doesReduces the excess to zero, or close to it | Typical costA higher daily fee |
Names differ between companies. Compare what each option leaves you paying, not what it is called.
3What does rental car insurance not cover?
- Driving off-road, on sand or in the desert — the most common reason a claim is refused.
- Any driver not named on the contract.
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs; the UAE has zero tolerance.
- Crossing into Oman without the company's written permission and the extra cover it arranges.
- Often: tyres, windscreen, undercarriage and interior damage, unless the policy says otherwise.
- Damage you cannot back with a police report.
4Why is a police report essential?
In the UAE a car is only repaired under insurance with a police report. Without one — even for a scrape in a car park — the insurer will not pay, and the rental company charges you the full repair, not just the excess.
For minor accidents in Dubai with no injuries, the report can be made through the Dubai Police app; otherwise call 999. The report states who was at fault, which decides whether your excess applies.
If you find damage you did not cause — a dent in a car park — report it before you return the car. An unreported dent is treated as your damage.
5Does credit card rental insurance work in Dubai?
Some credit cards include rental car cover. It usually works by reimbursing you after you pay the rental company, and it has its own exclusions — many exclude the UAE, luxury cars or rentals over a set length. Check your card's terms for the UAE before you decline the company's cover.
6Questions to ask about insurance before you sign

Frequently asked questions
What is the insurance excess on a rental car in Dubai?
Typically around AED 1,000–2,000 on an economy car and several thousand dirhams on luxury models. Full cover reduces it, often to zero.
Does rental insurance cover desert driving?
Almost never. Standard rental insurance excludes off-road and sand driving, so any damage there is yours to pay in full.
Can I drive a Dubai rental car to Oman?
Only with the company's written permission and the Oman insurance it arranges, usually for an extra fee. Without them you are uninsured the moment you cross.
Do I need full insurance on a rental car in Dubai?
It is optional. It is most worth it on expensive cars, long rentals and first trips on Dubai's roads.
Does my credit card insurance cover a rental car in Dubai?
Some credit cards include rental car cover, but many exclude certain countries, car types or the excess. Check your card's terms for the UAE before relying on it — the rental company will still hold its deposit.
Is third-party insurance included in Dubai car rentals?
Yes. Every rental car in the UAE must carry third-party liability insurance, and basic cover for the car itself is usually included, with an excess. Full cover reduces or removes that excess.
