Quick answer

After you return a rental car, a Dubai company may deduct from your deposit for damage not recorded on the pickup form, excessive cleaning such as deep sand or spills, smoking in a non-smoking car, fuel not returned at the agreed level, and admin for fines or Salik. The exact charges vary by company, so check your contract. Photograph the car at pickup, and if a charge looks unfair or undocumented, ask for the evidence and dispute it.

What a company can take from your deposit

After you return the car, a company may take charges out of your deposit. They fall into a handful of groups, set out in the table below. Which ones apply, how a company words them and what it charges all vary, and your own contract is where the real terms are written, so read it before you sign and keep a copy.

You won't find prices in this guide, because no single figure applies to every company. For real per-company fee data, see our fee transparency report.

It varies by company, so check your contract. Amounts are left out on purpose: no single figure applies to every company.

Ask the company to point you to its damage, cleaning and smoking clauses before you pay. What counts as excessive, and how a charge is worked out, is far easier to settle before the rental than after it.

Damage: why the pickup photos matter most

A damage charge is typically for damage that is not recorded on the pickup form. That is exactly why photographing the car at pickup matters: if a mark was already there, your photos and the form are what show it, and without them it can come down to your word against the company's.

Do it before you drive away, even if the car looks spotless. A few minutes at pickup can save a long argument at return.

  • Walk all the way round and photograph every side of the car, including both bumpers.
  • Take a close-up and a wider shot of every scratch, dent, scuff or chip, so its position is clear.
  • Photograph the wheels and rims, the windscreen and windows, and the roof.
  • Photograph the inside too: seats, mats, boot and dashboard, so any existing stains or marks are on record.
  • Photograph the fuel gauge, so the level you collected the car with is on record.
  • Check that every mark you found is written on the pickup form before you drive away, and keep a copy of the form.
  • Keep the original photos and back them up, for example by messaging them to yourself, so there is a dated copy.

Film a slow walk-around video as well, saying where each mark is as you go. It takes a minute and is easy to show later.

Cleaning and smoking charges

A cleaning charge is for excessive mess, such as deep sand or spills. Where the line falls between ordinary use and excessive mess is something a contract may or may not spell out, so look for the wording before you sign and ask if it is not clear.

Smoking is the one to avoid altogether. Most rentals are non-smoking, and smoking usually triggers a cleaning or penalty charge, which a company may take from your deposit. Do not smoke in the car, and ask your passengers not to either.

As with damage, evidence matters. If the seats, mats or boot already had stains or sand when you collected the car, your pickup photos show it. When you return the car, photograph the inside again, so you have your own record of the state you handed it back in.

In the contract itself, look for three things.

  • How clean the car is expected to be when you return it.
  • How cleaning and smoking charges are described, and whether an amount is named.
  • Whether a charge can be taken from your deposit, and how you will be told about it.

Fuel, fines and Salik: the other deductions

Two more deductions can sit alongside damage and cleaning. The first is fuel: if the car is not returned at the agreed level, a company may charge for it. The second is admin for fines or Salik, which can reach you after the rental has ended.

The agreed fuel level is whatever you and the company agreed at the start, so check your contract and confirm it at pickup. The fuel gauge photo you took then, and another at return, put both readings on record.

For fines and Salik, check how your contract handles them and whether it mentions an admin charge. Our fees tool helps you check fees and the true cost before you book, and our guide to hidden costs covers other extras that can reach the bill.

At return: photograph the car again

If a charge follows, you will want to compare the company's before and after photos with your own. So repeat the pickup routine when you hand the car back: walk round it, and photograph every side and any mark, the inside and boot, and the fuel gauge, before you leave the handover point.

If the company checks the car with you, ask for the result in writing and keep a copy. If it does not, your photos are your record. Keep them, along with your pickup photos, the pickup form and your contract, until your deposit has come back in full.

Our guide to returning a rental car in Dubai covers the handback.

Do it before you hand over the keys. Once the car has gone, so has your chance to photograph it.

If a charge looks unfair: how to dispute it

If a charge looks unfair, or arrives with no evidence, you do not have to accept it unchallenged. This is general information, not legal advice, and no route guarantees a particular outcome: what you can recover depends on your contract and on what you can show. The steps, though, are the same each time.

  1. 1Ask the company for its evidence: the reason for the charge and its before and after photos. Ask in writing, so there is a record.
  2. 2Compare what it sends with your own pickup photos and the pickup form. Then reply in writing, say which charge you dispute and why, and quote the company's own terms back to it.
  3. 3If the deposit was taken as a card charge, ask your bank for a chargeback. A hold that has not been captured can simply be released.
  4. 4If the company still will not put it right, go to Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), which a Dubai-licensed rental company answers to. File a Dubai Consumer complaint or call 600 54 5555 (at the time of writing). The UAE government's consumer-protection page explains the steps.

Our deposit-back tool builds the letter and the escalation ladder for you, so you are not starting from a blank page. Whichever route you use, keep the contract, the pickup form, your photos, every receipt and every message.

Frequently asked questions

What can a Dubai car rental company take from my deposit?

Typically damage that is not recorded on the pickup form, excessive cleaning such as deep sand or spills, a smoking charge, fuel if the car is not returned at the agreed level, and admin for fines or Salik. Which of these apply, and what they cost, varies by company, so check your own contract.

Can I be charged for damage that was already on the car?

A damage charge is typically for damage not recorded on the pickup form, which is why photographing the car at pickup matters. If a mark was already there, show the company your photos and the form, and ask it in writing to withdraw the charge. If it refuses and the deposit was taken as a card charge, you can ask your bank for a chargeback, and you can also file a Dubai Consumer complaint with DET. No outcome is guaranteed.

Is there a smoking fee on a Dubai car rental?

Most rentals are non-smoking, and smoking usually triggers a cleaning or penalty charge that a company may take from your deposit. The wording and the amount vary by company, so check your contract, and do not smoke in the car or let anyone else do so.

How much is a cleaning or smoking charge?

There is no single figure: it varies by company, so check your contract before you sign. For real per-company fee data, see our fee transparency report.

What should I photograph when I collect a rental car?

Every side of the car and both bumpers, the wheels, windscreen and roof, a close-up and a wider shot of each existing mark, the inside including seats, mats and boot, and the fuel gauge. Check that each mark is written on the pickup form, keep a copy, and repeat the same photos when you return the car.

How do I dispute a damage or cleaning charge?

Ask the company in writing for the evidence and its before and after photos, then reply in writing with your own photos, the pickup form and its own terms. If the deposit was a card charge, ask your bank for a chargeback; a hold that has not been captured can simply be released. If that fails, file a Dubai Consumer complaint with DET. Our deposit-back tool builds the letter and the escalation ladder. No outcome is guaranteed.

Who handles complaints about a Dubai car rental company?

A Dubai-licensed rental company answers to Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). Raise the problem with the company first, in writing, then file a Dubai Consumer complaint or call 600 54 5555 (at the time of writing). The UAE government's consumer-protection page explains the steps.

Can a company take money for fines or Salik after I return the car?

Admin for fines or Salik can be among the charges taken from a deposit after you return the car. How a company handles them, and whether it adds an admin charge, varies, so check the contract before you sign.
