Quick answer
A standard car rental in Dubai holds a refundable deposit — typically AED 1,000–1,500 for an economy car, AED 2,000–5,000 for an SUV or premium model and AED 5,000–20,000 for luxury and sports cars — usually as a hold on a credit card. It is released 14–30 days after you return the car, once traffic fines and Salik tolls have had time to reach the company.
How much is the deposit for a rental car in Dubai?
The deposit follows the car's value and the damage excess on its insurance. As a typical range:
| Car type | Typical deposit |
|---|---|
| Economy (Nissan Sunny, Kia Picanto) | Typical depositAED 1,000–1,500 |
| Mid-size sedan or compact SUV | Typical depositAED 1,500–3,000 |
| Full-size SUV and premium cars | Typical depositAED 2,000–5,000 |
| Luxury and sports cars | Typical depositAED 5,000–10,000 |
| Supercars (Lamborghini, Ferrari, Rolls-Royce) | Typical depositAED 10,000–20,000 or more |
Benchmarks, not quotes. Each company sets its own amount — ask for it in writing with the price.
Is the deposit a hold or a charge?
On a credit card it is normally a pre-authorisation — a hold that reduces your available limit without leaving your account. When the company releases it, the limit comes back; nothing is refunded because nothing was taken.
On a debit card, or when a company charges the card instead of holding it, the money does leave your account and comes back as a refund, which can take longer to show. Ask which one the company uses before you sign.
Why does it take 14–30 days to get the deposit back?
Traffic fines and Salik tolls are registered against the car, not the driver, and they reach the rental company after you have gone — a speed camera fine can take days to post. The company keeps the hold long enough for them to arrive, then deducts anything owed and releases the rest.
A card hold that is not captured also expires on its own after a period set by your bank, which is why some holds disappear sooner than the company's stated window.
What can be taken from the deposit?
- Traffic and parking fines, usually with an admin fee per fine.
- Salik and Darb tolls, with VAT.
- Damage up to the insurance excess, if you did not buy full cover.
- Fuel, if the car comes back below the level it left at.
- Extra kilometres over the mileage allowance.
- Late return, cleaning, smoking or lost-key charges written into the contract.
How do you get your deposit back faster?
- 1Photograph the car, the fuel gauge and the odometer at pick-up and at return.
- 2Return it on time, with the fuel level you collected it at.
- 3Ask for a return receipt that states the car came back without new damage.
- 4Ask for the release date in writing, and for a statement of any deductions.
If a company keeps a deposit past its own stated date and will not explain the deductions, keep the contract, photos and messages. You can report it to the TripReview Scam Watchlist.
Can you rent a car in Dubai without a deposit?
Yes, on many economy and mid-range cars. You pay for skipping the hold one way or another: a higher daily rate, a non-refundable deposit-waiver fee, or a lower mileage allowance. Fines and tolls are still billed — to the card on file or by invoice — so no-deposit does not mean no charges.

- 3Do you accept debit cards or cash for the deposit?
- 4How many days after return is it released?
- 5What is the admin fee on fines and tolls deducted from it?
- 6Will I get a written statement of deductions?

What each company holds
A deposit is the largest sum a rental company asks you for, and the one least likely to appear next to the daily rate. Below is what each company on TripReview publishes, quoted from its own pages — 7 of 13 say.
"Your deposit type, amount and method of payment will vary by agreement type." No amount published.
read from uptowndxb.com · 2026-09-27No amount published. Selected cars can be rented with no deposit for "an additional daily fee ranging from AED 40 to AED 100 per day"; sports cars and supercars always require one.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get a car rental deposit back in Dubai?
Usually 14–30 days after you return the car, depending on the company and your bank. The wait covers fines and Salik tolls that post after the rental.
Can I pay the deposit in cash?
Some companies accept cash, but most want a credit card, because a card hold can be adjusted for fines that arrive later.
Does the deposit cover damage?
Up to the insurance excess. Full or super collision damage waiver cover reduces the excess, and with it what can be taken for damage.
What if the company does not return my deposit?
Ask for a written statement of deductions. If none comes, keep your contract and photos, contact your card issuer about the hold, and consider reporting the company to the Scam Watchlist.
Is a car rental deposit refundable?
Yes. It is a security amount, returned after the rental minus any fines, tolls, fuel or damage charges. Ask for a written statement of any deductions.
Can I rent a car in Dubai with a debit card?
Some companies accept a debit card, usually taking the deposit as a charge that is refunded later rather than a hold. Many insist on a credit card, so ask before you book.
