Quick answer
Dubai, like the rest of the UAE, has no zip or postal code the way the US or UK do, so there is nothing to look up. When an online form insists on one, most people simply enter 00000; for a card's billing address, use the postal code of your home country, not Dubai. What actually gets a rental car or a parcel to you is the area, the building and a Makani number or a map pin.
Does Dubai have a zip or postal code?
No. The UAE never adopted the house-by-house postal code system used in the US, the UK and most of Europe. There is no zip code for Dubai, none for any other emirate, and none for an individual building or street. Traditional mail goes to a PO Box rented from Emirates Post, not to a home address, so a residential postcode was never needed.
This catches most visitors out, because so many online forms treat a postal code as compulsory. The sections below cover exactly what to type in each case, and the location code the UAE uses in its place.
What to enter when a form demands a zip code
It depends on what the form is really asking for. Two very different things hide behind the same box, and getting them the wrong way round is what makes a payment fail.
- For a delivery or site address in the UAE there is no code, so enter 00000 (five zeros) when the field will not accept a blank. Some forms also take the area name. The code is ignored anyway; your area, building and phone number are what reach you.
- For a foreign card's billing address, use the postal or zip code of your home country, the one your bank holds for that card. This is the usual reason an online payment is declined in Dubai, so your home code goes here, never 00000.
| Where | What to enter |
|---|---|
| UAE delivery address | What to enter00000, or the area name |
| Billing address, foreign card | What to enterYour home country postal or zip code |
| Billing address, UAE card | What to enter00000 |
| Airline or visa form | What to enter00000, or leave it blank if allowed |
If a payment keeps failing, check the billing postal code first — it has to match the address your bank holds for the card, not your Dubai hotel.
Makani: the address code the UAE actually uses
In place of postcodes, Dubai uses Makani — a ten-digit number given to every building entrance in the emirate. It points to the exact door, which is why deliveries, taxis and even ambulances rely on it. You will see it on a blue-and-white plate beside most entrances, and you can look one up or share it in the free Makani app or on the Dubai government site.
For anything brought to you — a rental car, a SIM, a meal — a Makani number or a dropped map pin is far more useful than any code you could type into a postcode box.
Ask your hotel or building reception for its Makani number, or long-press your spot in a maps app to copy a pin — either one gets a driver to the right door.
PO Box: the traditional UAE address
Official post in the UAE goes to a PO Box, a numbered box at an Emirates Post branch rather than a street address. Companies and residents quote a PO Box on paperwork, but it is no use for a physical delivery, because nobody is sent to a box. As a visitor you will rarely need one; if a form asks and you have your hotel's, you can use it, and otherwise 00000 is fine.
Giving an address for car rental delivery
Most Dubai rental companies deliver the car to you, so the address they need is a place to meet, not a postcode. Give them the area, the building or hotel name, and a Makani number or a map pin. Add your phone number and the time, and that is everything they work from.
Where the booking form has a postal code box, 00000 is fine in it — then put the real detail in the delivery notes, or send a pin once the company confirms. Airport pickup is the same: the terminal and your flight number matter, not a code.
Send a live map pin for the meeting spot — it removes the guesswork that an address line and an empty postcode box leave behind.
Frequently asked questions
What is the zip code for Dubai?
There is not one. The UAE does not use zip or postal codes for streets or buildings, so no area of Dubai has one. When a form requires a number, most people enter 00000.
What should I enter in a postal code field for Dubai?
For a UAE address, enter 00000 (five zeros); some forms also accept the area name. For a card's billing address, use the postal code of your home country, not Dubai, because that is what your bank checks.
Why does my online payment fail in Dubai?
Often because the billing postal code is wrong. A foreign card's billing address has to use your home country's postal code, matched to what your bank holds — entering 00000 or a Dubai code can get the payment declined.
What is a Makani number?
A ten-digit code for one building entrance in Dubai, shown on a blue-and-white plate and in the Makani app. It is what deliveries, taxis and emergency services use in place of a postcode.
How do I give an address for rental car delivery?
Give the area, the building or hotel name and a Makani number or map pin, plus your phone number and the time. A postcode is not needed, and 00000 is fine if the form insists on one.
Do I need a PO Box as a tourist?
No. PO Boxes are for official mail, not deliveries, and visitors rarely need one. If a form asks for a postal code, 00000 works.
