Quick answer

The UAE car rental market is large and growing: published 2026 estimates range from roughly US$0.7 billion to over US$3 billion, depending on how each research firm defines the market, and Dubai alone drew about 18.7 million international visitors in 2024. Demand comes from both tourists and the emirates' large expatriate population. The figures below are published third-party estimates, not TripReview numbers, and the firms use different scopes — so read them as ranges, and cite the source and its definition if you use one.

How big is the UAE car rental market?

Estimates differ widely, and the reason is scope: some firms count only short-term rental revenue, others add long-term leasing, limousine and ancillary products, so the same market can look like well under a billion dollars or several billion depending on the definition. That is normal for a market this fragmented, and it is why a single headline figure is misleading on its own.

Taken together, the published estimates point to a market worth low single-digit billions of dollars a year and growing at a healthy single-to-double-digit annual rate. The common thread is direction, not a precise number: steady growth, driven by tourism and residents alike. Whichever figure you cite, pair it with the firm and the year so the scope is clear.

Published UAE car rental market-size estimates (third-party, scopes differ)
Mordor IntelligenceEstimate~US$0.69B (2026), to ~US$1.33B by 2031Note~13.9% CAGR; narrower rental scope
MarqstatsEstimate~US$3.18B (2026 est.)NoteCore rental and lease, excluding ancillary products
Grand View ResearchEstimateUS$2.46B (2024) → US$5.24B (2030)NoteBroader market definition

Figures are third-party published estimates with different base years, currencies and scopes. They are not TripReview figures. Cite the source and its definition rather than the number alone.

Before quoting a market-size number, check what it includes — short-term rental only, or leasing and limousine too. That single choice explains most of the gap between sources.

Who rents cars in the UAE, and why

Two very different groups keep the market busy. Tourists rent short-term — Dubai received about 18.72 million international visitors in 2024, per the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, and visitor numbers have been climbing — while the emirates' large expatriate population sustains deep long-term rental and leasing demand, often by the month rather than the day. One industry guide claims a majority of Dubai's visitors rent a car; that specific figure is unverified, but the two-sided demand is well established.

The split matters because the two groups buy differently. A visitor compares daily and weekly rates, pickup at the airport and insurance; a resident compares monthly and long-term plans, mileage allowances and handover terms. Demand also follows the weather: the cooler months draw more visitors, so prices and availability tighten in peak season and ease in the hottest months.

The two demand sides of UAE car rental
Tourists (short-term)Typical needDays to a couple of weeksWhat they compareDaily/weekly rate, airport pickup, insurance, mileage
Residents (long-term)Typical needMonthly and multi-monthWhat they compareMonthly plan, mileage cap, maintenance, handover terms

Both sides pay the same tolls, deposits and VAT; the difference is the plan length and what each weighs most.

What does car rental cost in Dubai? (typical benchmarks)

These are TripReview's own listed benchmarks, written at the time of writing, not quotes for a specific trip. Small economy cars are typically listed from around AED 90 a day, a mid-size economy sits nearer an AED 380-a-day market average often quoted across the UAE, large SUVs run to several hundred dirhams a day, and luxury or supercars start from around AED 3,000 a day. Rates move through the year — March is often listed as one of the cheaper months — so compare the same dates and class everywhere.

A headline rate is only part of the cost. The deposit, the mileage allowance, insurance, tolls and any one-way fee all move the total, which is why a daily figure and an all-in figure can differ sharply. To turn a rate into a real total for your dates, use the true cost of renting tool; to see per-company fee data rather than averages, read the fee transparency report; and to find the lower end of the market, start with cheap car rental in Dubai.

Deposits, mileage and fees — the market norms

Beyond the rate, a few norms shape almost every UAE rental. Many companies include around 250 km of driving a day before charging for extra distance, with excess kilometres often priced near AED 0.5 each — our mileage limits guide explains how that works. A deposit is held separately from the rate, Salik tolls are recharged by the company, and fuel is usually returned as collected.

From June 2026, 5% VAT applies to Salik tolls and public parking, so those pass-through costs are a little higher than before. None of these are the rate, but together they are often the difference between the cheapest-looking car and the cheapest actual rental — which is exactly what a like-for-like comparison is for.

How to use these figures

If you are citing the market, name the research firm and the year, and say whether the figure is rental-only or includes leasing — that one line prevents most of the confusion between sources. If you are budgeting a trip, treat the price benchmarks here as starting points and compare the same dates, car class and terms across companies.

The surest number for your own trip is the one you build from a real itinerary: set the dates, the class and the pickup point, add the deposit, mileage, tolls and insurance, and compare the all-in total. Start that on the car rental in Dubai page, where typical prices, deposits and reviews sit side by side.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the UAE car rental market?

Published 2026 estimates range from roughly US$0.7 billion to over US$3 billion a year, because research firms define the market differently — some count short-term rental only, others add leasing and limousine services. The consistent signal is a market worth low single-digit billions and growing steadily. Cite the source and its scope when you use a figure.

How many tourists visit Dubai each year?

Dubai received about 18.72 million international visitors in 2024, according to the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, and numbers have been rising. That inbound tourism is one of the two main drivers of car rental demand, alongside the emirates' large resident expatriate population who rent and lease long-term.

What is the average car rental price in Dubai?

There is no single average, but a mid-size economy car is often quoted around an AED 380-a-day UAE market average, while small economy cars are typically listed from around AED 90 a day and luxury cars from around AED 3,000. These are listed benchmarks at the time of writing, not quotes — compare the same dates and class for a real figure.

Is car rental in Dubai expensive?

It spans a wide range. Small economy cars are among the more affordable in the region, while luxury and supercar rental is a large and visible part of the Dubai market. What moves your total most is often not the rate but the deposit, mileage, insurance and tolls, so compare the all-in cost rather than the headline price.

Do most Dubai visitors rent a car?

A large share do, and some industry guides claim a majority, but that specific figure is unverified. What is clear is that both tourists and residents rent heavily, which is why the market is large relative to the population. Whether you need one depends on your plans — compact, Metro-served itineraries may not require a car every day.

What is the cheapest month to rent a car in Dubai?

At the time of writing, March is often listed among the cheaper months, with a listed yearly average nearer AED 165 a day for a mid-size car. Prices track demand and weather, easing in the hottest months and tightening in the cooler peak season, so compare your exact dates rather than relying on a monthly average.
