Quick answer

UAE residents rent with their Emirates ID and a UAE driving licence, plus a credit card for the deposit. Once your residence visa is issued you are expected to drive on a UAE licence, not your home one: many nationalities can exchange their licence, others must take lessons and a test. Residents often choose monthly rentals, which bring much lower daily rates and, with some companies, lower deposits.

1What do residents need to rent a car?

Documents for residents
Emirates IDNotesThe original, valid for the whole rental
UAE driving licenceNotesValid for the type of car
Credit card in your nameNotesFor the deposit; some companies accept debit cards
Passport with residence visaNotesSome companies still ask for a copy

2Can new residents drive on a foreign licence?

Visitors can drive on an accepted home licence, but once your residence visa is issued you are expected to get a UAE licence. If your country is on the exchange list, you can usually swap your licence without lessons; otherwise you go through a driving school and tests. Check the RTA's current rules for your nationality, and ask the rental company what it accepts in the meantime — the insurance depends on it.

3Is a monthly rental worth it for residents?

For the first months in the UAE, or between cars, a monthly rental avoids a loan, registration and insurance. The daily rate on a monthly deal is well below the daily price, and servicing is usually included. Compare monthly car rental in Dubai with long-term rental if you need a car for most of a year.

4Do residents pay a lower deposit?

Sometimes. Some companies take smaller deposits from residents, especially on monthly rentals, because fines can be traced through the Emirates ID. Others treat everyone the same. Ask, and compare no-deposit car rental, which usually costs more per day instead.

5How do fines and Salik work for residents?

Fines and tolls on a rental car are still registered to the car, so the company pays them and charges you, often with an admin fee. For serious offences, black points can be transferred to your own UAE licence.

6Tips for residents renting a car

  • Keep your Emirates ID and licence valid for the whole rental.
  • Add your spouse only if they hold a UAE licence too.
  • Check the monthly mileage limit — often a few thousand kilometres.
  • Ask about a replacement car while yours is serviced.
  • Read the early-return terms on monthly deals.
